CHAPTER ONE
Lucy
Ryan Wilson was the kind of man you wanted to throw you up against the wall, spread your legs, and frisk you—slowly, methodically, thoroughly. He was older, with dark eyes and hair, though a bit of gray had begun to pepper his temples. She could instantly imagine him teaching her things that she desperately wanted to learn.
He had the chiseled features of a Greek god, broad shoulders and towered over you in such a way that you felt safe from everyone but him. Lucy suspected that beneath the police uniform he was wearing lurked perfect pecs and washboard abs, not to mention other impressive physical attributes. He was damn near perfect—and she despised him on sight. It was tough to reconcile her immediate attraction to him with the deep seated loathing for his kind.
Men like Ryan Wilson were exactly the sort she’d avoided all her life, the ultimate Alpha. If not for having lost a bet, she wouldn’t be here with him at all. What sort of guy can’t take five minutes to change before a date anyway? Did he stay in that uniform to impress her? Because he looked good in it? Or was he seriously so busy that he had to go out in his work clothes?
Whatever the reason, it was working for him. Women all around them looked at him appreciatively, despite her presence. Drawn to his Alpha magnetism, they were completely oblivious to the Omega sitting across the table from him. It wasn’t their fault, he gave off a vibe that human women couldn’t really understand about this wolf in human clothing.
“I’m surprised a guy like you is on Alpha Meets Omega,” she told him, taking a bite of her steak.
“Why?”
“I would think it might expose you to the wrong sort, considering your occupation and all.”
“I could say the same for you.”
“No one cares if an art student accidentally goes out with a criminal once or twice. We’d just look edgy, bohemian. It could look poorly if a cop does it.”
“Are you a criminal?”
“Would I tell you if I were?”
He leaned back in his chair, his stygian eyes scanning her as if he had some sort of super sensor that would reveal the truth if he looked at her intently enough. She wondered what he was thinking. Was he analyzing her like he would a suspect he was questioning? Maybe he was just perving on her under the guise of looking like he was considering her comment. Even that annoyed her about him.
“Hmm. Have I done something wrong? Rubbed you the wrong way?”
“No. You don’t like being asked questions? You like to do all the asking?”
“I just get the feeling that you aren’t all that thrilled to be here,” he said, shrugging his shoulders.
He didn’t sound angry or even bothered by it. If anything he seemed a bit bemused, which was typical too. Alphas were all alike—cocky, entitled, superior. Someone like him didn’t care what she thought, not really. He was above her in station. She’d been dealing with his kind ever since she was old enough to understand the roles of Alphas, Betas and Omegas.
Her father was the Alpha of their pack. He’d disgraced her mother and their pack with his arrogance. That life wasn’t for her. At first opportunity, she’d jumped at the chance to move far away and go to art school, which she was only a couple of semesters away from finishing. She hadn’t dated much since she’d been here and wasn’t interested in doing so now, but she’d lost a bet to her friends. This was the price she was forced to pay.
“I lost a bet.”
“You’re here because you lost a bet?”
“Yep.”
“What kind of bet was it?” he said, a single eyebrow cocked in her direction.
“I was a little drunk, okay? We were betting on one of those stupid reality shows. You know, one where someone has to go home each week? I lost.”
Dammit. She wished she hadn’t told him that. Now, she sounded like some sort of low IQ party girl. Then again, why did she care? It didn’t really matter what he thought, did it?
“So, you lost and now you have to go out on a date with me? How’s that work?”
“Not just you. I never date Alphas. I have to go out on a date with five different Alphas.”
“I see. What number am I?”
“Five.”
“So, it’s almost over for you then. I really appreciate you selecting me as a part of your little penance. I love taking out women who have no intention of ever seeing me again.”
The sarcasm hit her in the face like a wet sock. He was offended and why shouldn’t he be? She had just stereotyped him as being like every single Alpha she’d ever met. Of course, from her viewpoint, he likely was, but Alphas all liked to think they were unique and better than any other Alpha. That’s what made them what they are.
Then again, Lucy felt like a schmuck. He was right. Yeah, he was an Alpha, but she wasn’t really giving him a chance, just like she hadn’t given the four before him a chance. Well, one of them kept taking calls from his ex-girlfriend on his phone, so he didn’t really give himself a chance. This one, though, he seemed decent enough. It wouldn’t hurt her just to attempt to have a good time would it?
“Listen, I’m sorry. I’m being rude. Let’s start over. Tell me about being a cop. Do you enjoy it?”
“I don’t know if enjoy is the right word. I’m committed to it. I believe in it.”
“What are you doing on a dating site, really? I mean, you can guess why I was there. It was the easiest way to get dates with five Alphas, but what about you? I’m sure you meet plenty of women in your line of work.”
“Not exactly the kind I’d want to date,” he said, laughing.
“Right. I guess not. Okay, so you don’t meet the right kind of women at work and you signed up for a hookup or two on Alpha Meets Omega then?”
“Not a hookup.”
“Ah, looking for a baby mama then.”
“Is that what you think all Alphas do? We spend all our time hunting for a subservient little Omega to mass produce a family for us?”
“Honestly, yes. No offense, but that’s been my experience.”
“With what, the other four Alphas you dated this month? Week? I think I will take offense if it’s okay with
you.”
“Fine. What are you looking for then?”
“Alright. Here’s the thing. I work a lot and it can be kind of dangerous dealing with some of the folks I come across. I can’t afford to bring a family into that situation. It wouldn’t be good for any of us, but I do like to date every once in a while. Since we’re being brutally honest here though, I just needed a date for the Valentine’s Dance that is coming up at the station. The guys are leaning on me hard to bring a date. I didn’t bring anyone to the Christmas Party and skipped the New Year’s Eve gathering, so they’ve noticed it and are ragging me.”
“That’s it? You just want a date for some dance?”
“Yep. That’s it. I guess I should keep looking, huh?”
Lucy smiled at him and took another bite of her steak, using the time she needed to chew to study his face. He didn’t seem like most of the Alphas she knew, though they’d only spent a short amount of time together, so far. If he wasn’t looking for a baby factory and just needed a date to a dance, perhaps they weren’t so far apart in what they were looking for, after all.
“We’ll see,” she told him, a smirk on her face.
He chuckled and dove into his own food, the conversation shifting to more lighthearted subjects with considerably less animosity. By the time they were finished, they were laughing like old friends. They stepped out of the restaurant and stood a little awkwardly on the sidewalk facing one another. Lucy wasn’t sure she wanted the night to end so early. Instead, she found herself desperately wanting him to kiss her.
“I guess this is goodnight,” he said with a shrug.
“I guess it is.”
“Unless you want to have a few drinks with me.”
“Can you drink in that uniform?”
“No, but if you want to come to my place, I can change out of this uniform and we can have some wine. Or I think I have some gin and rum. Probably some beer.”
“Are you trying to seduce me?”
“Wouldn’t dream of it.”
Lucy wasn’t sure if he was joking or not, but she didn’t let that stop her. Even if he was putting a move on her, she hadn’t gotten laid in a while. This hot Alpha would do nicely for scratching that particular itch.
“Okay. Should we take my car or your cruiser?” she said nodding toward the police car sitting in a nearby parking space.
“We could take the cruiser, but it’s not mine. Whatever officer drove it here might get a little pissed about it. Plus, you’d have to ride in the back. It’s in the rules.”
Lucy laughed and he leaned down to kiss her. It was just a quick peck, but so soft and oh so warm. She felt it tingle along her nerve endings, where it ignited a previously ill attended ember she’d all but forgotten existed.
“How about I follow you?”
“Sounds like a plan,” he replied. “The black Dodge Charger is me.”
Lucy glanced past him at the dark charger with chromed out wheels and tinted windows. It looked like a drug dealer’s car. If he weren’t wearing a uniform, she’d have to think twice about whether he’d been honest about what he did for a living. Even he must have to admit it was hard to reconcile the undercover car with the police uniform. Talk about a contradiction.
“Okay. I’m right behind you then.”
“Great. I don’t live far.”
All the way to his house, she considered just turning around and going back to her apartment. What was she doing? Just because he was a cop didn’t mean it was safe to go back to his house with him. He was still an Alpha, after all. Her mind lectured her all the way there, even continuing up to the point where she pulled up beside him at his house. The garage door slid open and he pulled inside, while she parked out on the outer drive.
As he climbed out of his car, her libido took over and told her brain to fuck off. She was doing this. Hopefully, she’d soon be doing him.
CHAPTER TWO
Ryan
Ryan was surprised that things were going this way so quickly. I mean, with most women, it was a given that he could get them into his bed with minimal effort. Lucy seemed different though. She wasn’t your typical Omega. In fact, he’d have to describe her as being deeply opposed to being a part of the Omega status quo. There was something about her that he was so drawn to, but he couldn’t put his finger on it. Perhaps it was just that she seemed to be driven by something more than a desire to mate and have kids.
Still, he told himself not to let things go too far—to pace himself. They’d just have a few laughs and a few drinks and he’d let her have the bed while he slept on the sofa so she didn’t drive home under the influence or he’d call her a cab if she preferred. Instead, he found her intoxicating.
“How did you get this scar?” she asked, tracing her finger down his neck flirtatiously as they sat on the sofa watching a movie and drinking a bottle of wine he’d forgotten his neighbors had given him as a house warming present when he moved here three years ago.
Her touch made him ache, but he pushed it aside.
“A girl gave it to me.”
“A girl?”
“Yes, when I was nine years old.”
“Why?”
“Because I told her that boys were stronger than girls. So, she shifted and gave me something to remember her by. Well, she did more than that. She kicked my ass,” he laughed.
“Who was she? A neighbor? Kid at school?”
“My sister.”
Lucy laughed and continued to trace her own nail lightly along the long, thin scar that always reminded him of his sister, Jen. Of course, he could hardly associate her with the sensations Lucy was creating there now.
“How many siblings do you have?”
“Only her. I had a brother, but he died several years before that.”
“I’m so sorry,” she said softly, her heart melting laughter fading away into a melancholy tone.
“It’s okay. He had some problems. I can remember a lot about him but can hardly recall his face.”
“And Jen? Where is she?”
“Oh, she’s alive and as feisty as ever. She is married to the Alpha of our pack, so I don’t get to see her very much.”
“Why is that?”
“I’m a bit of an outcast. Let’s just say that not everything they do in my pack is legit and cops aren’t all that welcome. I hardly see any of my family, but we aren’t on bad terms. We’re just . . . different.”
“Yeah. I can relate to that,” she mused, then added, “here’s to strained family relations.”
Ryan tapped his glass to hers as she held it up. It was an obvious attempt to change the subject and he let her get by with it. Not everyone was comfortable talking about their family. He’d gotten used to it over the past eighteen years, having left the pack straight out of high school to attend police training and join the force.
“So, how long have you been here?” he asked.
“About three and a half years. I’m in my final year of art school.”
“What kind of art are you interested in?”
“I do some painting at home, but I’m not very good at it - the freehand stuff, that is. I prefer digital media. I’m focusing on graphic design.”
“Sounds like the way to go with social media and all being such a massive thing, advertising and stuff too.”
“I hope so. Right now, my expenses are mostly covered by my scholarship and grants, but I’ll need to get a job pretty quickly once I graduate or I’ll be eating canned peas from the food bank.”
“I doubt that there has ever been a wolf shifter reduced to eating from a food bank when they can just go out in the woods and hunt.”
“True enough, but you know what I mean. I can’t pay my rent in rabbit pelts.”
“You could with the right landlord.”
“My landlord is a vegan and a veterinarian. It was her Mom’s house. She won’t even come into my neighborhood. If anything goes wrong, she sends her handyman. She said she tried to sell it and couldn’t, so she deci
ded to rent it - cheap.”
“Yeah, you’re going to need a job . . . and another place to live,” he laughed.
“It’s not so bad, really. You’ll have to come over and see it. It’s like it’s in a place surrounded by shacks and crack houses, but then there is this one street that is clean and tidy with decent little houses on it. Fairly geriatric, but that’s okay. It keeps things quiet there.”
Ryan didn’t miss the invitation but decided to not acknowledge it. He poured her another glass of wine and they continued to talk until the attraction between them had become too obvious for either of them to ignore. He leaned forward and pulled her toward him, kissing her softly on the lips. It was like tossing the proverbial match onto a flame, as everything erupted into a fire raging out of control.
They quickly went from kissing that seemed to connect not only their lips, but their entire being. Fumbling with one another’s clothes, they couldn’t get them off fast enough. She was already in only her bra and panties, which were soaked with need, as he knelt down to slip off her heels and push her back onto the sofa.
The kiss resumed, stoking the flames until they were quickly a barn burner that wouldn’t be put down anytime soon. Finally, he pulled away, working his way down one side of her neck, kissing and nibbling until he reached her shoulders. His hand slipped under her bra strap and began sliding it down her arm as he looked down into her eyes, now dark with passion.
“Is this okay? Do you want me to stop?” he asked, desperately hoping she didn’t say yes and no in the wrong order.
She was too far gone too, managing only a raspy, “Don’t stop.”
He sank his teeth into her shoulder, enjoying the way she moaned beneath him. This was the most a woman had excited him in a very long time and he didn’t want to detract from what might be a one-time experience by doing it like teenagers on their grandma’s sofa while she slept. He finished slipping her bra away and then picked her up, letting her wrap her legs around him with a pair of perfect breasts brushing his face. He walked her to the bedroom and dropped her onto the bed, never taking his eyes off of her as he slipped her panties off and dropped them on the floor.
